Chinese in Singapore: How they got here

This video "How Colonial Singapore got to be so Chinese" narrates the arrival of the Chinese in Colonial Singapore.

Like many other immigrant groups in the world, there were push and pull factors.

The Push factors were strife and poverty back in the homeland (@3:15) the Taiping Civil War of the 1850s, the riots of 1890s, and the Boxer Rebellion in 1900.

The famines of 1901, 1906, and 1910 and the flood of 1887 were other push factors.

But push factors would just push emigrants out of China.

Why Singapore?

Well, by the late 1800s, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand had shut their doors to Chinese immigrants with anti-immigrant laws. Singapore was one of the few places that would accept Chinese Immigrants (@3:57)

But let me not recreate the video. This is not my video. I just found it on Youtube.
